At FIRST®, learning never stops building upon itself, starting at age 6 and continuing through age 18. The FIRST® progression of programs includes Junior FLL (Junior FIRST® Lego League) for Grades 1 and 2, FLL (FIRST® Lego League) for Grades 3 through 5, FTC (FIRST® Tech Challenge) for Grades 6 through 8, and FRC (FIRST® Robotics Competition) for Grades 9-12. Our Junior FLL team is open to K through 3rd graders from the local area. Howell Highlander Robotics has two Jr. FLL teams; Dragon City Team #8359 and Techno Bots Team #8360.
WHAT DOES A Jr.FLL TEAM DO?
Each year, FIRST® LEGO League Jr. presents a new and exciting Challenge to ignite the creativity of young children. While exploring the real-world theme, teams will learn about simple machines as they build a model made of LEGO® elements with a motorized part. They will also learn to present information through a Show Me Poster. Throughout their experience, teams of 6 students in grades K thru 2 will operate under a signature set of Core Values, celebrating discovery, teamwork, and Gracious Professionalism®.
The Model gets teams moving! Teams build a representation of what they are researching, based off the Challenge, and incorporate simple machines and movement into their creation.
Create a Model that fits within a 15” x 15” footprint.
Design a Model made of LEGO® parts. Typically, a team of 6 will use 400 to 1,000 LEGO parts during the season.
Must have at least one motorized piece on the Model.
Create a simple machine using LEGO ramps, levers, pulleys, gears, wheels and axles, screws, or wedges and incorporates this into their model.
THE SHOW ME POSTER
The Show Me Poster requires teams to illustrate their research and team journey. It provides an opportunity for them to share what they studied, what they learned, and to show information about the team and each team member. Teams will create a Show Me Poster using a flat poster board or tri-fold presentation board. Students use words, drawings, photos, and small objects to tell about what they have learned during their Challenge research. They show where they hunted for answers and describe the people they spoke with on their journey. They also describe their Model and simple machine.

THE CORE VALUES
While Jr.FLL teams work on the Model and the Show Me poster each year, they are guided by the Jr.FLL Core Values. The Core Values are part of what makes Jr.FLL so special, because students learn positive ways to respect their teammates, coaches, and other teams. Our last, and most significant Core Value, is “We have FUN!”
FIRST LEGO LEAGUE Jr. EVENTS
Local FLL events provide an opportunity for Jr.FLL teams to showcase their work and meet other teams who share a similar interest in science and technology. Events provide a venue for positive sharing, learning, laughing, and celebrating! An event can be as simple as a meeting of a team, families, and friends to share what was learned. Or, an event may include many teams sharing in a public venue. Larger events offer the opportunity to share and learn from one another.
WHO IS A COACH?
A coach is any adult willing to facilitate the thrills and spills of technology and fun with kids. No technical background necessary. Participating in the Junior FLL is an amazing experience for both the kids and the adults involved. With our guidance, the students are going to inspire you, and those around you, in surprising ways. The Junior FIRST® FLL program is equally beneficial to the students and the companies that provide support.
