Marbles, Foil, and Boats

August 18, 2017

On Monday, the Howell Highlander FRC Robotics team in collaboration with the Howell Carnegie Library, taught st through 3rd graders in the young engineers club. The challenge the kids completed involved the kids building a boat out of tin foil while being able to float and carry many marbles. The real life situation was to build a boat to get people off a deserted island. The people are represented by the marbles. When the kids finished the challenge there were 5 boats. The boats could all hold from 150-220 marbles. The children then presented their work for their parents in groups. All and all the kids learned how to work together nicely and compromise to make a boat everyone could enjoy.
