S.C.O.T.S Bots is an epicenter of activity year round and that includes the summer months. The team takes the opportunity to participate in two Community Outreach activities during each of the summer months, even though school is not in session. During the month of July, in collaboration with the Howell Carnegie Library, high school students led a Young Engineers Club for students in Grades 1-4, and a Design Squad Challenge for students in Grades 5-7. Young would-be engineers used the process of planing, designing, building, and testing, which mimicked a real world experience. During Young Engineers Club, upper elementary aged students, mentored by a high school student, were required to build a roller coaster using cardboard tubes, tape, and marbles. The only requirements were to work together and include at least one loop in their design. During the Design Squad Challenge, engineering littles were required to create a structure, using only modeling clay and coffee stirrers, that could withstand an "seismic shake up." An earthquake simulator was created by the high school students and used to test the models against "earthquake shaking." Next month, S.C.O.T.S. Bots students will be recruiting new high school students to join our team by manning a registration table at Freshmen and Sophomore high school registration. Interested high school students can sign up then to join our team!
